Today in class we talked about a lot of stuff. It was hard to keep it all straight! I with things were a little slower. I guess that it just takes me a while to absorb it all.
I like seeing Dropbox. I have used it before and as a matter of fact, I had to use it before next week to be able to get somethings done in the district. It has worked GREAT for several people all working on the same document. I still have a ways to go before I understand all of the sharing stuff, but I am figuring it out. It is great for storage that other can get to, IF they understand it as well. I thoroughly agreed with the comments about creativity and the video we watched. I always feel more inspired when I work with others, especially teacher where we all teach the same subject. I can see how Google Docs would be helpful in this collaboration, but it will also take some time to get used to it. It has amazing capabilities, especially with live-style editing by a group! I REALLY am enjoying the class! I just hope I can get enough use in to be able to use the things that we are learing. Maybe I am just getting old, but I feel that I need more e WOW!! Today's class was insane! We talked about Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. It was a lot to digest. I don't think I want to do all of these different types of social media, but it was good to be exposed to all of them. I really like the them all, but is it really faster or better than email and a web page? Each has it s benefits, and I think I will go with Facebook and Pinterest. However, I just have had students tell me that they are no longer on Facebook and that it is a thing of the past. So much with keeping up to date.
Jared showed us Subtext, and we got ans intro to Skype for educators, and they both seemed pretty cool. I want to know how to do get/write my own text to use with subtext, and I also want to find more people to contact with Skype for educators. One thing I would like is to have class go a little slower and step by step, tutorial style. It is hard to figure out once in class, and the go home and do it through the processes. At times it seems that we are going to fast to be able to grasp the process. Later, we switched to submitting assignments new way, so we will see how that goes! it seems crazy, just as I was figuring out the old system!! Oh well, I checked our several of the tools and presentations posted on the website for class today, and found 3 sites is liked: myuen.org, National Geographic and Ebsco SIRS.
I was already familiar with the my uen.org site. However, after looking at the sample site, I realized that there is much more that I could be doing with it. The RSS feeds and the bookmark links seemed to be things that I want to learn about and at the same time would be useful for my upper level Spanish classes. There is a trend to use online texts and resources, and I think that this is just the ticket for what I want to do. It will enhance the website that I already have. I did not want to give up my current website, but I really like the Weebly. I can simply link one to the other and presto, nothing gets lost and there is still access to everything! I am also a little picky with resources, because I teach a foreign language. This made it hard to pick some of the other sites because of the limited content or nothing available in Spanish. National Geographic is a no-brainer. I love the magazine already, and they give discount. They have lots of resources that deal with the countries that I talk about in my classes. I LOVE the maps, especially the ones that are about population density. It is fund to talk about Mexico City and Europe, and how they compare and contrast in these areas. My third choice was the EBSCO SIRS site. It also gives access to maps, but it also helps kids to use scholarly sites to cite their work and find sources that are relevant to what they need. This is very important as we work on developing writing and integrate the 6+1 Trait Writing Strategies. There also had a part that entailed country facts that are much more detailed than the textbooks that we use offer. I did have an issue at trying to be able to log into the site with CultureGrams online database. I could not log on or even really see a sample of what they had to offer. Maybe I just missed the link or didn't click in the right place? Below you will find the note from the class that I take every week. They are a tad bit unorganized as they are written as ideas occur to me or as things are emphasized by my teachers.
Web 2.0 seems pretty cool. I like the concept of being an interactive part of what I am learning and what is going on around me. I have some concerns though. How can I get kids to do this while I maintain a professional distance? I have been brought up being taught that as a teacher, I can give information out to kid form the web, but other than email, I don't contact students. I guess phone calls home are OK, but that is usually to talk to a parent. That make me kind of wonder about social media. I was all of the tweet stuff, but 50% of my students do not have smart devices or access to these features in a classroom. Does that mean that I pair them up wit the students who do? Our school generally does not allow the use of cell phones as I believe it is written per district policy. What about itouches or labs with such devices? Is there a device that strictly does Twitter and is locked in to my class so students can't use it to d other things? Social media seems to be a bit much for the her and now based on restrictions to use of devices in the current format the we have. I think we need to have some MAJOR training for both students and teachers before I would feel comfortable using this in my classroom. If a college kids does not participate, yet he comes to class and sits there and seems to be participating ans is not learning, does the professor care? As a public school teacher who is supposed to help all students, I should and do. I think it is a bit different when a someone shows up and is paying cash to learn, versus the kid who is here to learn because the class is required and whose parents will call to tell you that you are not doing your job because their kid is not doing well. We need to teach kids to be responsible for themselves and handle the opportunities that they have in a responsible way, like twitter for the class discussion, not text their friends, when they have a device they can use. The web-based technologies seem pretty cool, but I will need more training to use them effectively. I wonder if there is a program like I have seen in PC labs that make the device that the student has lock on to what I am doing and not let them use it for non-educational tasks. Or maybe there is a way I can see all of the screens of the devices of all of my students so that I can keep track of what they are doing, kind of like the big angled mirror in the back of the old computer labs. I will have to ask my school techs what they know about these kind of technologies. .
