Below you will find the note from the class that I take every week. They are a tad bit unorganized as they are written as ideas occur to me or as things are emphasized by my teachers.
Web 2.0 seems pretty cool. I like the concept of being an interactive part of what I am learning and what is going on around me. I have some concerns though. How can I get kids to do this while I maintain a professional distance? I have been brought up being taught that as a teacher, I can give information out to kid form the web, but other than email, I don't contact students. I guess phone calls home are OK, but that is usually to talk to a parent. That make me kind of wonder about social media. I was all of the tweet stuff, but 50% of my students do not have smart devices or access to these features in a classroom. Does that mean that I pair them up wit the students who do? Our school generally does not allow the use of cell phones as I believe it is written per district policy. What about itouches or labs with such devices? Is there a device that strictly does Twitter and is locked in to my class so students can't use it to d other things?
Social media seems to be a bit much for the her and now based on restrictions to use of devices in the current format the we have. I think we need to have some MAJOR training for both students and teachers before I would feel comfortable using this in my classroom. If a college kids does not participate, yet he comes to class and sits there and seems to be participating ans is not learning, does the professor care? As a public school teacher who is supposed to help all students, I should and do. I think it is a bit different when a someone shows up and is paying cash to learn, versus the kid who is here to learn because the class is required and whose parents will call to tell you that you are not doing your job because their kid is not doing well. We need to teach kids to be responsible for themselves and handle the opportunities that they have in a responsible way, like twitter for the class discussion, not text their friends, when they have a device they can use.
The web-based technologies seem pretty cool, but I will need more training to use them effectively. I wonder if there is a program like I have seen in PC labs that make the device that the student has lock on to what I am doing and not let them use it for non-educational tasks. Or maybe there is a way I can see all of the screens of the devices of all of my students so that I can keep track of what they are doing, kind of like the big angled mirror in the back of the old computer labs. I will have to ask my school techs what they know about these kind of technologies.
