CMaP Final Project
This project outlines how I would use the skills learned in this class to teach about Hispanic foods to the students that are in my Spanish classes where I teach. Take a look at it if you are interested in how GPS skills can be used in the community and involve Spanish!

Mapping Class, Day 4
Today we got to go on buses up the canyon and around town. We marked sites, took water samples, and had a great time. We all worked together to gather data. I did some GPS coordinates, temperature samples, and some ph samples. We also looked for wildlife in the water. It was a lot of fun and we noticed that as the water got closer to the city, several things changed. Ph levels, and amount of dissolved oxygen changed, but the nitrate levels did not seem to have any change. See the interactive map below. Also found below are screen shots of each thing measured.
Water Project Data File
This is the Water Project data file used to create the maps and layer for group 6. We used Google drive to all work on the document and get all of the data collected and in one place quickly.

6/18 Day 3 Mapping class
The days are a little out of order, but I decided to put the latest on top. Here is Group 15 CMaP trees, with the 3 layers of type, height and diameter! It took a lot or work! My GPS was giving the same coordinates for different trees, some some information had to be hand copied into what we see here! That got me a little behind, and catching up was a nightmare! here is the final product below! Things went well, but after the GPS issues, I felt like I was lost. Luckily, the ladies behind me, ( thanks Alicia!) were very helpful. Some layers may be hard to see, but they are all there!
I am excited for tomorrow! We learned a lot about watersheds and what we will be seeing tomorrow. I need to get here early to catch the bus.

6/17-Mapping class day 1
I really enjoyed class today. I liked having a GPS and being able to use it in a different way. I usually have used it in my car, but that is about it. I felt a little overwhelmed. I wish things were repeated one more time for me, one of the slow people. Most things were up on the screen, and that was very helpful. When it was not, it was a little harder to move forward. The breaks were nice since I am not used to sitting for hours. I would like a daily checklist to help stay on track for the day and the week. I still am a little fuzzy as to the whole final project concept.
6/18 Mapping Class Day 2
Today we started out by using GPS units to make a track and be able to export it. Here is my track for my initials, although they are upside down!(see below)
We had a lot of fun doing what was a GPS geocache in groups, but it was hard to find all of the items! (seee below for questions and answers used in the activity.)
I really liked being able to see what all we need to have done and the change to let the creative juices flow as we listened to people from the community. I will have to see if Kevin Sato can provide me with some maps that we can use. I will be doing my project on Spanish foods and establishments. Now I just need to flesh out my template and get it looking good. Ross mentioned that other Spanish teachers had done projects before, so i will have to look through some previous projects!

Later, we went on a hunt using coordinates. Questions at each site(with answers here) included:
1. How many sides are there to a stop sign? -8
2. How is most of the power generated in Utah? -Coal
3. Who is the preacher at the Alta Canyon Church? -Tim Peery
4. How many outs are in an inning? 6
5. How do you tell the age of a tree? -Count the rings.

Teaching through Technology!
I once hear someone say that if Abraham Lincoln were to come into our schools today, he should feel out of place. If he doesn't, it would be because we are still teaching the way he would have learned in the 1800's. In my web pages you will find the things that I do and am working on to help bring teaching into the new age.
A blog tells what I am learning about in my techology classes, while notes are simply that: my notes from or during my classes.
My class artifacts are things that I have produced or mad as a result of my classes.
Feel free to see my old web page at http://my.uen.org

Enjoy!
