I checked our several of the tools and presentations posted on the website for class today, and found 3 sites is liked: myuen.org, National Geographic and Ebsco SIRS.
I was already familiar with the my uen.org site. However, after looking at the sample site, I realized that there is much more that I could be doing with it. The RSS feeds and the bookmark links seemed to be things that I want to learn about and at the same time would be useful for my upper level Spanish classes. There is a trend to use online texts and resources, and I think that this is just the ticket for what I want to do. It will enhance the website that I already have. I did not want to give up my current website, but I really like the Weebly. I can simply link one to the other and presto, nothing gets lost and there is still access to everything!
I am also a little picky with resources, because I teach a foreign language. This made it hard to pick some of the other sites because of the limited content or nothing available in Spanish. National Geographic is a no-brainer. I love the magazine already, and they give discount. They have lots of resources that deal with the countries that I talk about in my classes. I LOVE the maps, especially the ones that are about population density. It is fund to talk about Mexico City and Europe, and how they compare and contrast in these areas.
My third choice was the EBSCO SIRS site. It also gives access to maps, but it also helps kids to use scholarly sites to cite their work and find sources that are relevant to what they need. This is very important as we work on developing writing and integrate the 6+1 Trait Writing Strategies. There also had a part that entailed country facts that are much more detailed than the textbooks that we use offer.
I did have an issue at trying to be able to log into the site with CultureGrams online database. I could not log on or even really see a sample of what they had to offer. Maybe I just missed the link or didn't click in the right place?
