Today in class, about half of us did our presentations. It was pretty cool to see them. Some of the presentations seems to be a little hard to follow. It made me think about how it is important to be organized. I also realized that TIME is crucial for a good score on the final presentation! By going over the 10 minute mark, 3 points are automatically deducted according to the rubric. This seems a little unfair, like it should be deducted in increments, like they were earned. However, I realized that too long can cause problems for all of the other teachers who have to present.
We had a mini training session, and i realized that it is super easy o take pictures of the documents and insert them into a presentation controlled from the Ipad, called Keynote. We already have it from the district, and is super easy to use and make presentations. Many people stated that if they had known how to use this program, they would have used it for their presentations. I personally have not decided which to utilize, although I have already developed a ppt to get me started with my presentation. I have a week to finalize all of my documents, and today i got help in getting them uploaded. I had had issues before, since we had only done it once in class and I could not remember where all of the features were or how to use them. I have it figured out now, but I stinks that I had not posted my document

I never really thought about how we have to evaluate at every turn! I guess as a teacher, I fell that kind of becomes automatic. As an educator, I constantly evaluate if it worked, how to make it better, what to do when things don’t work, how to present the material in less time and keep it effective, etc. I never really thought about how much it really entails.
I really liked the part where we talked about summative and formative assessments. It really made me think about how I grade and how I have been graded. In my Masters Program, 95% of the classes were evaluated on a summative test! The only measure of formative assessment was the fact that I could lose points for not attending class. On the other hand, I grade my students on participation, tests, quizzes, and homework, with 25% for each category. The part on rubrics was pretty cool. I like to be able to see all of the helpful stuff that is available to us online. I already even have a web page through UEN, so It was cool to hear that it can be saved through them. I have some rubrics that I use, but I feel like I could be more explicit in letting my students know how they will be evaluated and have a clear method of grading so that all parties involve know what is expected and what their level of work will result in. I really liked the parts dealing with Teach Like a Champion. It seems that there are a lot of good ideas put forth, and they don't seem to take a lot of time to go through or implement. Although I took notes on them during the presentations, I will definitely need to go back and re- read many of the strategies. There are just too many for me to try to remember all in one night!
I also realized that I am weak in the area of having a plan B. I guess I am used to finding other things to do when things fall through. Although I may have some skill in this area, it would be wise to be able to plan specific activities to do for when issues occur. It is tough when technology failures occur, but I don't feel to far removed from being able to use paper, pencil, the dry erase board, etc. I also realized that I have established routines, but I may have become a little lax during this last trimester. I need to keep students better engaged and on task to be able to maximize student learning. I could adopt the all business approach, and also use a strong voice with fewer words. Maybe I did not understand this quite correctly, as it seems to me that repetition is key, although that may be true for general teaching and not necessarily for establishing patterns. I guess I have a lot of work to do. I am still unclear as to all of the parts that I need to turn in and all of the details that it involves. I guess that I will submit what I have ans what I can and then make changes based on feedback. During class, I have thought a lot about the different ways that I have learned to do lesson plans. It is pretty simple in foreign language. We model, help students, and then monitor as student are able to do the activities on their own. However, I never really formally laid out he pattern of Task, Skill and sub-skill. I guess I informally usually think of what it takes to be able to do these things, but it s seemed that I had never put it into my planning in such a formal way. Doing so will help to keep me much more organized and focused! The three deep is a nice way to do it!
We talked about the 9 steps from the reading, and that seemed pretty much to be stuff that I already knew. It helped to see it again and thing about how to better apply it. I also thought about hoe to involve technology. I need to be thinking about what I can use or what students may be able to use. Almost all kids have phones these days, so calculators are an easy in. I suppose that later we can discuss apls that may help them to calculate temperatures and distances. Powerpoints and quizzes would be good to use, and even clickers!!! I will also have to use the survey to find out what kids know about the stuff that I will be presenting with and if they are already familiar with how use some of the skills that will be needed. I also like the way that the blooms were used and how higher order thinking questions can become part of the planning and learning. I have never put a formal part like that in my lesson plan outlines, but now that I saw examples of it, it seems so obvious! I have never put a formal part like that in my lesson plan outlines, but now that I saw examples of it, it seems so obvious! The project design seems to be pretty complicated. Not that it is a huge deals since I am a teacher and I know how to do lesson plans. The trice here for me will be to design the lesson while incorporating the other areas of language arts, science, math and social studies. It will take me some time to get ALL of those involved. It should not be too difficult though. i need to find the standards for these areas, and that might be a little more time consuming for me.
We saw how to use Wordle, and is seems that I will have several tools for use in teaching in these areas. As I a learned in the MA program in Spain: Things have to be measurable and observable. I didn't really think about pre-requisites for my students or for me as a teacher but it makes sense to me after the discussion and readings. Surveys can be used to pre assess what students already know and that is something that I plan on using in a written form and also as an informal way of finding out what is going on with previous learning. I am liking Canvas, but I feel like I need to use more to be comfortable wit. i can find things, but it still take me a while to get all of it together. i like to take pics with the iPad so the I can have instant notes at my access without wifi to be able to review the material. Nearpod was pretty cool for that. We learned lot about Analysis today. We can NEVER have too much data. Of course we may not use it all, but if we don't have any data, we have no where to start from! There is a lot of data available for teachers, and a lot of it is online! I am not exactly sure how to access all of it, but that will come with time and effort.
I have started to think about how I will incorporate the Social Studies, Science and other Core Curriculum components into my lessons, and I thing something is beginning to take shape. I am not sure how I am going to incorporate Chemistry into Spanish, but I have some ideas. Maybe F to C temperature changes in different countries at different times bases on seasons and the earth's rotation? I will be working on find the information from USOE in these areas, but it still worries me a little. I have been thinking about what types of surveys I could use with my kids. I have never really thought using anything but an exit survey because I usually gather data through the mastery tests that I give out to find out what they know from the previous years, or from informal types of assessments that I do when I converse with the students in my classes. ( what follows is from the previous posting. It was a summary of notes since the web page did not seem to save my previous drafts!) DISCUSSION ON ANALYSIS subject matter is the heart, non subject matter is the soulTHERE ARE SEVERAL COMPONENTS: LEARNING GOALS NEEDS ANALYSIS LEARNER ANALYSIS DEMOGRAPHICS TASK ANALYSIS We must use COMPONENTS OF LANGUAGE ARTS SOCIAL SCIENCES MATH We must also consider the CONTEXT OF INSTRUCTION We made power points in 10 minutes about ourselves. I felt like Spock trying to run the Romulon ship since I was working on a Mac! We made PBJ sandwiches to illustrate the fact that we need to be able to think about how our students think interpret and learn! This is my 3rd try as posting to the blog. I hope it works! Summer class weeks have been changed and one of the weeks starts on the 17th of June.
Today we talked about Instructional Design Systems. We discussed the works of Dickey and Carey, Reigluth, Merril, Ragan 7 Smith, Kemp, Ganier, Kirkpatrick, Backward Design, and Rapid Prototyping. Each Group gave a presentation on the author or theme of their Group. My Group was Ragan & Smith. I gave the brief intro and the pros and cons of the model. IN SUM Some models are really complicated; some are too simple; some are too redundant, and some focus on business or education They can all e cool and we want to ensure as much success as possible for use. We will be focusing more on the ADDIE model for this class. It seems to be the most widely accepted model. it is more adaptable to education |
